New Arrivals!

Nothing can quite take the place of hearing the cheeping of a baby chick, and feeling the soft fuzz between your fingers.
We got our chicks today, and since they grow so fast, my sister and I took some pictures of them before they start getting feathers.  (Several of them already have feathers starting on their wingtips.)  Once they start growing feathers, they don't look so cute anymore.
So here are a few photos for you of our fuzzballs who are barely hatched!
Picture
I found it a little funny how the chicks all struggled to get out of my hands when I picked them up, yet the turkeys just sat there like my hands were the softest bed in history.  Below are two of the turkeys, just chilling out in my hands.

We have several different kinds of chicks this year, including: Red Rock Cross; Rhode Island Red; Columbian Rock; and Barred Plymouth Rock .  .  . plus a few turkeys, which are new to us, so we're looking forward to seeing how that will work!

I'm not sure what breed the black chicks are, but I'm thinking that they're the Red Rock Cross breed.

Rodent Control: Part 4

In May 2018, Ginger had her second litter of kittens.  There were four of them: Dragon, a boy; and Cocoa, Sweetie, and Dragina (a name that originated from the name Dragon).
When the kittens got a little older, we started taking them out to the garden plots with us whenever we went to weed.  They would run around and play until they wore themselves out.  Then they would have a nap.
Picture
The only thing was, they didn't have a nap in a normal spot.  You'd think they would find some straw or thick grass in some shade or something, and sleep there.  But no.  When they would get tired of playing and were ready to sleep, they would crawl up my mom's pant legs and go to sleep there.  This always made things a little more difficult for Mom, because then she would be trying to awkwardly scoot along the ground to weed while trying not to disturb the kittens.

This is Cocoa.  She was my favourite out of the whole litter, and she was also one of the quietest (if not the quietest).  But she was a sweet little kitten.
One time while we were doing some work close to the house, Cocoa climbed a caragana bush and got stuck.  She sat there and mewed at us for a while, and I almost had to go and get her down.  But she finally decided that she was bored of sitting there, and she managed to get herself out of the bush.
Another time, on a warmer day, Cocoa went looking for a cooler spot to nap in.  I had made a (basketball-sized) mud bowl near the house, that I usually had filled with water.  There was a stick right in the center of the pool.  All the water that I had previously put into the pool had evaporated and soaked into the ground by then, and Cocoa curled herself around the stick in the pool.  It must have been pretty cool there, and she looked so cute.

Here's Dragon (right).  He was a louder kitten and had huge paws, like his uncle Rex.  In this picture, he must have just been getting up from a seated position, because he doesn't walk with his back legs like that.
Sweetie and Ginger went to the same new owner after the rest of the kittens were taken, leaving Dragon alone.  The next day he followed us around while we were picking peas, probably wondering what we'd done with his mother.
Then we heard yowling.  We all looked around to see where it was coming from, and here comes Rex with a mouse in his mouth.  He yowled until Dragon went up to him, and then Rex put the mouse down in front of Dragon.  He watched Dragon take it, then left.
We could hardly believe what we'd just seen.  Rex was taking care of Dragon?  It so cute!
Below is Sweetie, who was very active.  My sister always said that "Sweetie's middle name is Spunky".

Below are a few more pictures I wanted to share :)

And finally there was Dragina (below), a female version of Dragon.  (This name was invented by a twelve-year-old and a five-year-old.)

Below: I thought this was so sweet, that two of the kittens were napping with Davy.  This was one of the last pictures I took of Davy.
